Every once in a while, a metal band comes around and rises above the predictable lyrical concepts, pseudo-satanic imagery and repetitive, heavy riffs that plague the metal genre. With that being said, Dethklok menacingly looms over the brooding metal masses with their 2007 triumph, The Dethalbum. Dethklok are the fictional protagonists of the hit Adult Swim satire, Metalocalypse, so you aren’t expecting more than good laughs and some over-the-top violence as per the television show. But amazingly, the guitar work on The Dethalbum is refreshing and talented, along with hilarious lyrical content that will no doubt have you questioning the album’s validity – and the writer’s sanity. What real metal band could get away with writing a song about “mermaid murder”? The Dethalbum features Metalocalypse co-creator Brendon Small ripping it up on lead guitar, Frank Zappa alumnus Mike Keneally providing that smooth, jazzy feel only he can and the blast-beating madman from Strapping Young Lad, Gene Hoglan, bashing your brains in one kick drum at a time. You couldn’t ask for a more seamless amalgamut from within the metal genre. A must-hear, whether you still live in your mom’s basement or not.
